Up. Down. Up

On leaving Zermatt, the train descends 1,000 m, travelling down and along Switzerland’s deepest valley. From Brig, travel up the Rhone valley, past picturesque villages, before passing through the Furka tunnel to Andermatt – by now, you may well be enjoying lunch with a view in the restaurant car. From Andermatt, the train winds its way slowly up over the Oberalp pass – at 2,033 m a.s.l., the highest point on the journey. Passing the source of the Rhine river, you find yourself in the Vorderrhein valley. Continuing on down towards Disentis, with its Benedictine monastery and beautiful baroque church, you will soon pass Reichenau, where the train leaves the valley, heading up towards Thusis, and shortly after, crossing the breathtaking Landwasser viaduct on the Albula line. The Albula tunnel brings you out into the Engadine valley, only a stone’s throw from fashionable St. Moritz. Sightseeing at its best – a dream journey which really exists…
