Le Châtelard
Le Châtelard

The sights between Le Chatelard VS in the Trient valley and the Emosson dam are truly exceptional. Each attraction is special in its own way: the historic 1920s funicular railway is the steepest in the world to have two cabins, with a gradient of 87%, the Decauville panoramic train (with a 60 cm gauge) offers superb views of the area, and the "Minifunic" (the mini funicular railway) takes you straight up towards the sky.
Up, up and away could be the motto of the mountain trains that bring passengers all the way up to the Emosson dam. The first segment, the funicular railway leading from Le Châtelard to Château d'Eau, is so steep that you could be forgiven for thinking you are in a lift. With a gradient of 87% the silver-grey train is the steepest two-cabin funiclar in the world. Take time out to enjoy a break on the small, narrow-gauge train running up to Emosson. But don't look down: the view is vertigo-inducing! After this, it is time to change transport once more: the last leg of the journey is by Minifunic, a type of lift/cabin, which simply rises vertically. A true funicular safari!
