In 1889 the Zürcherbergbahn (as the train then was called) started operating. Today it still runs the same route as in 1889. In the beginning the “Bergbahn”, or “Mountain Train” ran on water – but as early as 1897 it was powered by electricity.
In 1976 the Bankgesellschaft (Swiss Banking Association) saved the train in the eleventh hour and founded its own corporation, "SBG-Polybahn AG". To meet the requirements for a licence for another 20 years, the train facility was upgraded and the two cars were completely renovated. Thanks to the complete renovation of the Polybahn in 1996, the “Student Express” will be able to transport future generations from the “Central" to the university and back.
This popular means of transportation serves annually over two million passengers. The train can transport 50 persons every 2 ½ minutes in both directions.
