Although the funicular train has experienced many technical innovations and modernizations, it still radiates as much nostalgia and romance as 127 years ago.
The Giessbach funicular, a meter-gauge train opened on July 21, 1879, climbs a length of 345 meters and overcomes 93 meters in height. Its destination is the Giessbach-See pier owned by Grand Hotel Giessbach. The mountain station is 666 meters above sea level, almost exactly 100 meters above Lake Brienz.

During the 4-minute ride, the red cars, which seat 40, cross the imposing waterfalls of the wildly frothing and gushing Giessbach. The red wagons, whose exterior appearance has been preserved since they were first built, still have the familiar wooden benches of bygone times and colored drapes, which offer the guests protection from unexpected rain.

The mechanical equipment of the funicular meets all the conditions for a safe and comfortable ride in spite of its age.
