The Gemmi Train climbs the steep Gemmi face to the wonderful mountain world of the Gemmi Region, which is famous for its rich traditions. The Gemmi Train was built in 1957 and has since then transported many a guest to an elevation of 2,350 meters.
Even the Romans are said to have walked the Gemmi Pass from the Bernese Mittelland to the main valley of the Valais. Later on, soldiers, pilgrims and traders followed in their footsteps. Many famous personalities like Mark Twain, Lenin and Pablo Picasso enjoyed this magnificent region.
Where in former times well-to-do travelers were carried in sedan chairs and later on in the well-known “Litte Gemmi Carriages”, or "Gemmi-Wägeli", across the cantonal borders, today you will find a cable car and well-maintained hiking trails. In 1985 the 50-year old Gemmi Train was modernized and since then has a capacity of 280 persons per hour.
Near the mountain station, high up on the rock face stands the new "Berghotel Wildstrubel", offering fine accommodation, excellent food and seminar facilities.
