We owe the construction of the mountain train leading to Monte Salvatore to the initiative of two men, Franz Josef Bucher and Josef Durrer-Gasser. The work on the narrow gauge line started in 1890. The train is called Funicolare Monte San Salvatore and it takes its passengers in comfort to a height of 909 meters. The viewing platform is only a stone’s throw away. The train runs every thirty minutes, from March to November. From the mountaintop you can enjoy the magnificent view over the Swiss countryside and Lake Lugano. There is also a playground with many activities for the small fry, while their parents take in the sweeping panorama.
A truly classic tour is the two-and-a-half hour hike via Carona to Morcote.
