Everyone in Freiburg knows the "Funiculaire" one of the city’s landmarks. The funicular was inaugurated in 1899 and links the city center with the Unterstadt section.
The “Funiculaire” in Freiburg is listed in the inventory of national heritage sites. This train is unique in Europe, for its operation is based on the city’s sewerage, which is used as a counter weight. The grinding and rattling of the hundred-year-old cogwheels is worth a detour. These noises accompany the visitor to the depth of the city’s soul: The “Funiculair” has remained to this day the link between the Unterstadt and Freiburg’s center…between history and modern life… a true symbol.
Access:
Freiburg is on the railroad line from Bern to Lausanne. The Funi can be reached in a few minutes from the train station. By car: Take the Freiburg exit on the Autobahn Bern - Fribourg - Vevey and drive to the city center.
