In the 1960s a reservoir lake was built in the area of Robièi, which at that time was still without public transportation. Access is possible only by cable car, which was installed by Ofima when the power plant was built.
Today it is open to the public and runs on a schedule. The cabin has a capacity of 125 and every summer transports more than 20,000 visitors to Robièi.
The area is of great interest on account of its untouched and scenic nature. It is connected by well-marked mountain trails with the valleys of Peccia, Sambuco, Bedretto and Formazza. Very popular is the crossing from Robièi via the Christallina Pass (2568m) to Airolo.
Since hunting is prohibited here, you can observe many animals. The Ibex often come to the vicinity of the Swiss Alpine Club’s Hut (SAC-Hütte) and they can also be observed on the ridges of the Arzo and Poncione di Braga.
At the Robièi Lake there is a large mountain hotel, a little further down is the Swiss Alpine Club’s Basòdino Hut.

As the cable car rides from San Carlo to Robièi climbs to lofty heights, the mighty Basodino Glacier gradually comes into view, a glittering white peak against the backdrop of a granite and gneiss landscape.
Access:
San Carlo is reached by public bus and PostBus from the Locarno Train Station or one of the other stops. In Bignasco one transfers to a smaller PostBus. By car one drives 40 kilometers from Locarno through the Maggia Valley and further through Val Bavona to San Carlo. If you hike the Pass (Christallina), you can return from Airolo by train.More links
