An award was bestowed on the restaurant "for the preservation of the centuries-old Zunfthaus (Guild House) culture, whose tradition is reflected in the carefully restored and replenished historic rooms, which offer the guest a high-quality experience".
The first reference to the Zunfthaus dates to 1308. At the beginning of the 15th century, a tenancy contract regarding the property was concluded with the Kaufleutenzunft (Merchant Guild) or Schlüsselzunft (Key Guild) and in 1445 the house became property of the guild. Besides being used as the meeting place of the guild, it served as a store and gathering place for the trade. From 1486 to 1488 the front portion of the house was remodeled and the rear building was constructed. Its long tradition as Zunfthaus zum Schlüssel contributed considerably to the preservation of the property. The metamorphosis into a baroque structure and the reconstructions in the 19th century are interesting testimonies to its multifaceted history.
With the renovation and alterations in 2007 the restaurant and inner courtyard have been converted into a generously laid out space in which the original free movement between the front building, the rear building and the courtyard was restored. The self-contained restaurant of 1883 had to be relinquished and only the original dividing wall was retained. The Master’s Chamber and the Guildhall have been superbly restored. The room gains immensely from the bold reconstruction of the wallpaper. The necessary infrastructure and adherence to the building code have been accomplished to optimum effect. On account of the large windows, the inn conveys the impression of transparency and is therefore very appealing. The daylight-flooded inner courtyard beckons the guest to enter the expanded section facing the street. The medieval building concept has been retained and can be relived and experienced intuitively. The sequence of the rooms, and the rooms themselves, offer variety and meet the most varied requirements.
