Lausanne

Lausanne, better known as the Olympic Capital, is in the French speaking region of Switzerland. Facing the Evian les Bains, which is the source of the world famous Evian Mineral Water brand, this Roman styled city is flanked on either side by Geneva and Montreaux. A wine producing region, the vineyards in the surrounding hills provide spectacular views of the Jura hills in the north and challenging routes for mountain sports like cycling.

Must Sees and Must Dos

Olympic Museum - If sport plays are an integral part in your life, this is the museum for you. Located in Lausanne, the Olympic Museum houses three form of human expression - sport, art and culture - all in one site. Olympicism is a state of mind and the Olympic Museum is its symbol. The museum hosts various exhibitions related to sports and is also a very good library for reference. The museum displays memorabilia of the past Olympic Games and Olympic coins struck by the mints of host countries of the Games.

Ouchy - If Lausanne is relaxed, then Ouchy, it's lakeside terrace is bustling with activity and is ideal for it's waterfront strolls. It is the ideal location to sit back and enjoy the spectacular mountain views of the famed Lake Geneva Region. Lake Leman, a separate commune from Lausanne, has survived for years as a fishing port, but these days it has become more swankier than most of the other Swiss lakeside resorts, with waterfront cafés abounding. The castle of Ouchy is an old medieval castle which is now running as a hotel. It is also very popular with the tourists for its panoramic view of Evian-les-Bains.

The Old Town - The medieval city was developed around the Cité promontory, sculpted by the Flon and Louve rivers. As an important crossroad Lausanne witnessed the emergence of five neighbourhoods: Cité, Palud, Pont, Bourg and St-Laurent. With its city limits pushed back from the Cathedral (in the 6th century), to Palud and Bourg (9th century) and to St-Laurent (10th century), the city reached its apogee around 1300. The Cité concentrated "official" structures such as Cathedral, Evêché (bishop's residence), the St-Maire Castle and the Grand Hôpital. La Palud evolved into a commercial and political hub with its City Hall. The Pont district grew at the junction of Flon and Louve rivers, now covered. The Ale Tower and that of Ouchy's bishop's castle (12th century) are the last remnants of some 50 towers which made up the citys medieval fortifications.
