Pilatus

Ride up the world's steepest cogwheel railway from Alpanachstad, and arrive onto the dragon’s land of, Mount Pilatus (2132 m altitude). According to medieval legend, the corpse of Pontius Pilate was thrown into a small lake on this mountain. Dreams and fantasies come true on this peaceful Alpine peak. Nowhere do the stars sparkle more brightly or the sunsets more stunning than on the Pilatus Kulm. With a little luck you can spot ibex, chamois, colorful Alpine roses, arnica or gentian on your journey to and from the mountain.

How to get there - There are two ways of reaching this mountain from Lucerne. From the Lucerne Railway Station, take trolley bus No. 1 to Kriens to the Pilatus stop (20 min.). Once here it is an easy 5 minute walk to the valley station in Kriens. Take the aerial gondolas to reach Fräkmüntegg, and then onto the summit. The Kriens - Fräkmüntegg -Pilatus route runs year-round. However, it will be closed for maintenance from mid Oct - early Nov. Alternatively, from the Lucerne Railway Station go to Alpnachstad by train or from the boat pier outside the railway station take a boat (90 min). Look out for the «Pilatus» sign at the railway station. Take the cogwheel train to Mt. Pilatus. The journey up is half-an-hour. The journey down takes a careful forty minutes. This route is seasonal. The trip of going up via Alpanachstad and coming down via Kriens or vice versa is called the Golden Round Trip.
