In July 1899, the train was completed, but could not run right away because it lacked electricity. But in September of the same year, visitors could travel comfortably by train to Bern’s local mountain. By the end of that year, 33,500 persons had ridden the train.
After the reconstruction of the Gurten Train in 1966, it became Switzerland’s fastest funicular, running 5.7 meters per second. The new Gurten Train has been operating since July 1, 1999. Visitors to Mount Gurten rave about the red panoramic cars. The capacity increased by 50 percent, a fact, which amazed even the organizers of the Gurten Festival.
