In the realm of four-thousanders
This long-distance trail has more highlights than any other, bringing together 14 of the most beautiful passes in the Graubünden, Ticinese and Valaisan Alps. It’s a great long-term challenge. The five highly scenic stages between the Simplon Pass and Zinal cover around 100 km in total and involve dizzying climbs that leave civilisation far behind and grant breathtaking views. Though the high-level trail between Saas-Fee and Grächen is only suitable for those with a head for heights and is secured with fixed ropes on tricky sections, the real challenge lies in the length of the stages. The high-level walk from the sundrenched mountain village of Grächen to the Turtmann Valley takes 11 hours, for instance. But it’s worth it: walkers are rewarded with tremendous views on every corner and can take a break at the historic Hotel Weisshorn in Val d’Anniviers, famous for its gâteau aux myrtilles (blueberry pie).

  • Simplon Pass, mountain hostel founded by Napoleon in 1801
  • Saas-Fee, Typically Swiss Hotel Beau-Site
  • Grächen, historic irrigation channels (Suonen)
  • St-Luc, Hotel Weisshorn
  • Zinal, glacier grotto
