The use of hydroelectric power in the Grimsel and Susten area commenced in 1925 with the founding of the Kraftwerke Oberhasli AG (Oberhasli AG power plants). In several stages, an impressive facility came into being that comprises eight dams and nine power plants, generating electricity for 1.2 million people.

The KWO is one of the leading hydroelectric companies in Switzerland. Due to its large storage lakes, which can also supply a huge amount of "fuel" in winter, the KWO can react promptly to the ever-changing demand for power throughout the year.

The first dam was built on the Grimsel pass, at the time being the largest one in the world. Over the years a gigantic system of power plants, cavernes and galleries has been built underneath the granite rocks - a technoligical miracle amidst this powerful environment. Visitors can now enjoy a day full of contrasts when visiting this very special location.

The visit of the facility is a journey of the past, showing you the power plant at Handeck, guiding you through the historical buildings and making the history of energy production come to live. Even today the original machinery is in place, still producing enough electricity today and in the future. On this guided tour you will get an insight into the very special world of this power plant and will get to enjoy a ride on the Gelmerbahn.
The tour is in German (other languages on request).

The Grimsel area offers a host of fascinating insights into electricity production from hydropower. The KWO runs restaurants and hotels, operates mountain railways, provides information about the subterranean world of the power plant, and builds and maintains overhead rope bridges and mountain trails.
