Opened in 1967 as an open ice arena, the stadium was covered in 1969 with an eye towards the upcoming World Ice Hockey Championship.
HRS Real Estate Bern AG was commissioned to renovate the stadium from 2007 - 2009. As an additional challenge, during the reconstruction and completion the match activities of the SCB had to be guaranteed in time for the Ice Hockey World Championships in 2009.
Besides the focus on improving the infrastructure and security, the building was enlarged by adding 7,500m2 of office and service space for Swiss Post and enhanced by the addition of a ground-level outdoor area and an underground training hall.
Of special note is the huge standing room grandstand with a capacity of 10,422 people - the world's largest in a hockey stadium.
