Berne's Lenten Carnival is a tradition since 1982.
At 8 p.m. on the Thursday following Ash Wednesday, the celebrations begin at the Prison Tower, when the traditional Carnival Bear - a carnival symbol since the Middle Ages ? is set loose among the citizens of Berne to celebrate until the early hours of Sunday morning.
