In addition to the hiking trail to the Lauteraar Hut, many other attractions in Switzerland, such as the route network of the Rhaetian Railway, five Swiss UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Sites, and seven Swiss winter sport resorts are also available to Street View users for virtual exploration.
The extraordinary scenery of the Swiss Alps is now open to virtual tourism: The hiking trail to the Lauteraar Hut in the Bernese Oberland is shown online at Street View, made possible by Trekker, a portable backpack with a 15-camera system.
The first photographs taken in Switzerland by Street View Trekker are available to the public at Google Maps starting immediately. They follow the hiking trail from Grimsel Hospiz to the Lauteraar Hut (Canton Bern), which was voted Queen of the Alps by the Swiss public in May 2014. For this project, Street View Trekker, a backpack equipped with a 360-degree camera system, was used for the first time in Switzerland. The system takes pictures of paths and trails accessible only on foot. To round out the virtual hike, 360-degree photographs of the inside of the hut are also shown online.
