Huwiler-Tower
Overview
Intro
The exact age of the Huwiler Tower is unknown, but, according to Linus Birchler, cannot be later than 1524/25. Other sources give the year as 1519 and claim that it was built by a citizen named Huwiler.
The Huwiler Tower was not named after its builder but after a later owner with the same name. Access to the tower was originally by way of the battlements of the walls on the city side on the first floor. It was only in 1826 that the tower got ground floor access and two windows. The new city fortifications were never actually put to the test. The Huwiler Tower could only be used for other purposes with restrictions, such as serving as a powder magazine, storage depot or theatre backdrop. The city of Zug, the owner of the Huwiler Tower, rented it out to the Corporals' Association Zug in 1975, which now makes the tower available to the public on various occasions
