1st day:
Biel/Bienne (Nidau)–Büren a.A. (12 km): The River Aare has always been one of Switzerland’s great lifelines. Once an important transport route, in recent times it has become a source of energy thanks to a series of dams and reservoirs. Today’s stage doesn›t follow the original course of the river – the meandering “Old Aare”, now much reduced – but a canal, one of several built over the years to control flooding, and which caused the drainage of the surrounding swamps. A paddle along the Nidau-Büren Canal with its lush green banks is a splendid adventure. Once the Aare reaches Büren, the river returns to its original bed.

2nd day:

Büren a.A.–Solothurn (17 km): A couple of paddle-strokes to start off, and you can relax and go with the flow. A trip along this tranquil waterway offers a wonderfully meditative experience. From picturesque Büren, the Aare winds its way gently through scenery typical of the Swiss Mittelland. You pass small islands, sleepy settlements and the “European Stork Village” of Altreu, where you can stop to see the nesting birds, the Witi nature reserve information centre – and the charming restaurant “zum grüene Aff” with its regional specialities. At the end of this stage is Solothurn, a magnificent open-air museum of Baroque art and architecture.
