Bürgenstock – Hammetschwand Lift

Bürgenstock

It created an absolute sensation when the hotel and railroad pioneer Franz-Josef Bucher-Durrer built the Hammetschwand lift at the Bürgenberg in 1905.

The hotel resort located at 874 meters a.s.l. has been a popular vacation resort since 1872. Its attractiveness was enhanced by the spectacular path (closed until spring 2013) along the vertical rock face and by an outdoor lift. To this day the lift and the rock-face path have lost none of their attraction.

The new lift was built and reopened by the Schindler company. It whisks passengers 152 meters up to the summit of the Hammetschwand in less than one minute. It was regarded as a pioneering feat in those days and is still a record holder, since the Hammetschwand lift is holding the number one position as Europe's highest outdoor lift (out of service in winter).

To reach the lift, you could travel from Lucerne to the Bürgenstock mountain with the vessel and nostalgic Bürgenstock funicular railway, which was first commissioned in 1888. Nobody would want to climb the 2283 steps. It is the oldest electric funicular railway in Switzerland.

Access: The funicular to Bürgenstock Resort is best reached by lake ship from Lucerne. There is a road (by mini PostBus) from Stansstad to Bürgenstock.

Information

Due for completion in 2015, Central Switzerland is witnessing the emergence of a premier resort – the Bürgenstock Resort. Therefore the Bürgenstock Bahn is closed until 2015.
