The Archbar is an example of the successful integration of historic décor into a new operational concept. With a minimum of architectural changes, the former restaurant was remodeled into a bar. Old and new do not compete with each other here. Wood panels, ceilings, wainscoting, balustrades, as well as the stove and floor coverings have been carefully preserved and form an important part of today’s décor. The historic tables and chairs were stored for safekeeping and have been replaced by modern furniture. The old buffet, integrated in the new bar, continues to be used. The internal development is being optimized by subtle interventions behind the scenes. The basic architecture of the building has been preserved.

The property at Archstrasse 2 was built in 1940. The Winterthur Milk Association gave the restaurant the name "Chässtube", or, "Cheese Room". The economic and societal environment has changed considerably in the last twenty years. A precondition for successful renovation of the restaurant was the simultaneous adjustment of the utilization concept. It was a big challenge to reconstruct the traditional restaurant in such a way that protected-monument aspects were taken into consideration and that the restructured restaurant met the needs of today’s public. Thanks to the excellent cooperation between owners, planners and the municipal authorities for monument preservation the diverse goals could be reconciled. A large part of the old, valuable architecture could be preserved and integrated into the new concept.
