While the Neanderthals once upon a time had to climb the mountainside on foot, today one soars comfortably up to the Eben Alp by cable car, past craggy rocks and the three caves that have been inhabited for so long. The mountain station of the aerial cable car on the high plateau of Eben Alp is the starting point for numerous hikes to the Appenzell Alpstein region.
Below the Eben Alp lies the Bears' Cave, through which one can reach the famous Wildkirchli, with its mountain restaurant, which is squeezed up against the rock face. Traces of Ice Age bears dating back up to 50,000 BC were discovered in the Bears' Cave. Some of these finds can be viewed in the Little Hermit House (Eremitenhaeuschen) in Wildkirchli and in Appenzell Museum.
