The historic Old Town of Geneva is situated on a hill on the left bank of the Rhône River. The town square "Bourg-de-Four" is at its center. The "Grand Rue" is a pedestrian zone that is lined by limestone buildings - the philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau was born in house number 40.
The Cathedral of Saint Pierre sits atop the hill on which the Old Town is located. The Cathedral was the erstwhile seat of Geneva's bishop. The roots of the actual building date back to the year 1160, however, traces of older church edifices from the 4th century have also been discovered. The ruins of a chieftain's burial place date back to the epoch of the Celts, when Geneva was the capital of the Allobroger people.
