Such box seats are indeed available on the Muottas Muragl, a mere 10-minute-ride from the lower parts of the Engadine Valley. Especially local painter Giovanni Segantini had an eye out for the beauty of this area, as well as the singular light that plunges this lake-studded high alpine plateau into a shimmering otherworldliness.
Then, in 1907, the funicular was opened to the summit of the 2453-meter-high Muottas Muragl. Soon thereafter, a hotel and a restaurant were opened, whose dining room with its panoramic views are an insider's tip.
