Schönbüel – Coziness above Brünig

At 2011 meters above the border separating the cantons of Obwalden and Bern one gets the feeling of standing at the gates of heaven. The panoramic vistas of the Bernese and Central Swiss Alps as well as the view down to Lake Brienz and Lake Lungerer have this effect on the visitor. A dense network of hiking trails meanders through the region around the vantage point of Schönbüel.

A few years ago it was feared that the mountain trains would cease operating because they lacked the funds for repairs. But the Lungerer population protested, and they prevailed upon the authorities of the rural community of Sarnen to get the canton’s funds needed for renovation. Today the new gondola train runs from the Turren mid-station to the mountain station of Schönbüel with its cozy rural chalet architecture. The first stage of the tour takes you by cable car to Turren.
