As early as 1860, there were several plans for the construction of the line, which failed due to financial problems. It took till July 27, for the first shovelfull of earth to be dug out for the construction of the Jungfraubahn. After a 16-year construction period, on August 1, 1912, the Jungfraubahn began operation. At the same time the railway station atop the Jungfraujoch (which is at 3454 meters above sea level to this day Europe’s highest railway station) became operational.
An excursion to the fantastic glacier world is one of the highlights of a trip in Switzerland.
The train ride is absolutely spectacular. For safety reasons a large part of the journey takes place within the rocks, but the windows opening up views of the Eiger North Face and the Sea of Ice offer an incomparable panorama. After arriving on the Jungfraujoch one may feel a bit out of breath, but absolutely on “Top of Europe”.
