The Zurich quarter of Hard borders on the quarters of Albisrieden, Altstetten, Escher Wyss, Gewerbeschule, Langstrasse and Sihlfeld. The four Hardau high-rises characterize the quarter. From 1978 to 2010, the highest of the four high-rises, with a height of 95 meters and 33 floors, was the highest building in the city of Zurich. Another high-rise is located at the southeastern edge of the quarter: the residential complex of Lochergut. It was built between 1963 and 1966 according to plans by Karl Flatz and is one of the oldest high-rises in the city of Zurich. Since the Hard quarter used to be a working-class area and many foreign workers from Italy and Portugal immigrated in the 1960ies, the quarter now has the highest proportion of foreigners in the city of Zurich with about 48 %. The Langstrasse quarter is also located in district 4. The most important buildings in this quarter are the Sihlpost post office, the former military barracks and the Volkshaus (near Helvetiaplatz). District 4 became nationally known mainly because of the infamous street Langstrasse which runs straight through the quarter up to Limmatplatz. Since the 1970ies, the red light district has been located here. With the Europaallee, which is currently under construction, a new connection towards Bahnhofstrasse will be established close to the train station. It will comprise the Zurich University of Teacher Education, apartments, offices and a shopping center with restaurants.
