Here the views compete with each other: what to look at first: the 23-kilometer-long Aletsch Glacier or the imposing set of mountains just beyond the Rhone Valley? If one tours the mountain ridge high above Bettmeralp and Riederalp one need never be worried about this decision since both are visible.
Depart from the mountain station Bettmerhorn (2643 m.a.sl.) along the crest, a former moraine between the Aletsch Glacier and the Rhone Valley, also once made by an immense glacier. Continue to Moosfluh and Hohfluh. Go in the general direction of Southwest up to Riederfurka. The hiking trail always follows the ridge, however to get to the North flank of the mountain one has to make a detour. Enter the Aletsch Forest between Hohfluh and Riederfurka and note that it has been a natural reserve since 1933. Its gnarly Swiss pine and larch trees exude a certain magic. End the hike at Villa Cassel, a 25-minute walk from Riederalp.
How to get there:
Drive or take public transportation to Betten, by aerial cable-car to Bettmeralp/Bettmerhorn.
Ultimate Hiking Experience: Aletsch Glacier
