The traditional zum Löwen inn is located near the shore of Lake Zurich in the center of the village of Meilen, right next to the parish church (which was built in the late Gothic style). The building was gradually built up to its present size, composed of seven smaller buildings: the oldest wooden parts date back to 1417 and 1418 and there are sandstone door adornments dating back to the 15th century on the ground floor. The inn took on its present appearance in the 17th and 18th centuries, when it was reconstructed to incorporate all the buildings into one large structure, a three-story main edifice with six wings, reaching to the lake. The hall that was built in the west wing has exquisite ceiling paintings dating back to 1876 and 1892. The paintings are stretching across an area that used to be the ceiling for two separate rooms.
The restaurant and the bar on the ground floor have exposed Baroque plank beam ceilings and new paintings. There are three lounges with tables on the second floor, some with original doors, wooden door decorations and cassette ceilings dating back to 1700. The atmospheric interior ambience is enhanced by tasteful modern furniture, which can also be found in the area in front of the building and in the garden by the lake. The new stage with its foyer or lounge, of carefully designed exposed concrete, was conceived as a northern hall extension under a hipped roof with the same ridge height.
The staircase and the elevator are separated from the historic part of the building by a clearance gap - the old and the new parts of the building are thus clearly defined.
