Aarau historic city centre

The first city wall dates back to the 13th century. In the 14th century the town was expanded while under Habsburg rule. Today the historic city centre presents itself as a well-preserved town centre with mostly late Gothic houses. The more than 70 richly painted eaves that adorn the historic city centre are a special feature. It is to these that Aarau owes its nickname "town of beautiful gables".

Well worth a visit are such historic buildings as the Obertorturm (Upper Gate Tower), the Obertor (Upper Gate), the 15th-century Stadtkirche, the Gerechtigkeitsbrunnen (Fountain of Justice) and the Landjägerwache.

A patchwork of water meadows

Created by monks, cultivated by farmers – the water meadows around Langenthal are the last examples of this form of irrigation, which also served as flood protection. A sluice in the river is used to divert water into a network of ditches and embankments in order to flood the fields.
