In those days, the guests of the Hotels Glacier du Rhone were able to dine with a view onto the nearby ice flow.
These days one has to hike for a couple kilometers before one comes to the glacier. Nonetheless, this hike is very interesting because it is doted with many didactic signs which show the apron of the glacier in all its splendor. There are moraines, plants that have found a home in the apron, the dynamics of the ice flow, animals that live here, and the various types of moors that the glacier has left behind. There is also some information on glaciologists and the science of glaciology. All this in a mere half-hour"s walk!
How to get there:
Drive or take public transportation from Brig or Andermatt to Gletsch on the Furka Pass.

The name of the village, Gletsch, says it all: it is clearly a place near a glacier. And indeed, that was once the case.
