The enormous forces of waters created one of the world's largest cave systems of the Hölloch Grottos in the remote Muota Valley, right in the heart of the Swiss Alps.
The enormous forces of waters created one of the world's largest cave systems of the Hölloch Grottos in the remote Muota Valley. The extensive caves are being investigated since they were discovered in 1875. Today, about 170 km are known, some of them made passable over the years but still a far cry of some other caves where cement and electrification have brough in an artificial feel. There is anespecially fascinating trek which allows would-be spelunkers to enter the caves and walk to a bivouac, full of stalactities and stalagmites. The caves are only accessible under the expert leadership of a cave guide and with headlamps. Visitors will negotiate subterraean lakes in light-weight boats, climb through crevasses, and hike through huge caverns. There are half-day introductory courses and for those who are interested in seeing more, there are even sleep-overs in some of the larger bivouacs where the absolute darkness and quiet envelope visitors.
Half-day and two-day excursions to the Hölloch Grottoes can only be arranged through the tour operator Trekking-Team, 6652 Tegna, Tel. +41 (0)848 808 007. Sleep overs only possible from November to March.

How to get there:
Drive or take public transportation (Swiss Post Bus) to Hintertal in the Muota Valley from Schwyz.
