When the reservoir lake was built on the Alp Piora in 1921, the construction workers and other personell needed a train to get there.
With a maximum gradient of 878 promille it is one of the steepest aerial cable cars in the world. The blue-red cars seem to ascend vertically. The funicular takes one to a lovely area full of interesting hikes and it has a great beginning and end: talk about vertical take-off!
Access:
By train from Lucerne or Zürich, or from Ticino to Airolo. By PostBus to the valley station of the Ritom Funicular. By car on the Autobahn A2 through the Gotthard Tunnel or from Ticino to Airolo, or Quinto, respectively. Then on the cantonal road to Piotta and to the valley station.
