The two locomotives could be contemporaries of our grandparents or even great-grandparents. They were constructed in 1903, respectively in 1913, and still get steamed up on a daily basis. The locomotives, christened "Weisshorn" and "Furkahorn" ride along the tracks connecting Gletsch to Furka by a 1874-meter-long tunnel.
After the the Furka Base Tunnel was built, the time for more modern equipment seemed to have come. But eventually the two locomotives were rehabilitated because of popular demand by lovers of steam trains. These days, this trip is one of the most spectacualr of its kind. It passes through several tunnels, over the Steffenbach Folding Bridge (which is constructed and deconstructed every spring and every fall), and over several viaducts. Not only steam fanatics will love this experience - the technological feats and the grandiose nature are in perfect harmony.
Steam rides from end of June to beginning of October.
How to get there:
Drive or take public transportation from Andermatt or Brig to Realp, respectively Gletsch.
