The mountain trail from Bettmerhorn to Märjelensee (Märjelen Lake) is
heavily sign-posted and flagstones have been adjusted and straightened
to make the hike more comfortable. The hike's highlight is the famous
Märjelensee Lake at the glacier's edge, which filled nearly the entire
small valley a hundred years ago.
Starting out at the mountain cable car station, this wonderful mountain
trail leads (at first with gradual and then in a few large loops) past
the ice terrace, high above the Great Aletsch Glacier and via stone
steps to "Red Chumma" ("Rote Chumma"). You continue on a wide path that
was hewn into the rock, towards Märjelensee (Märjelen Lake). The area
surrounding the lake is reminiscent of a polar landscape. You then
continue onwards through the Tälligrat tunnel (a shorter path, the
tunnel is lit) or around Tälligrat (a longer path, but more attractive)
to Fiescheralp and back to Bettmeralp.
