The church of St. John originates from 785. Its frescoes, the world's largest cycle of early medieval frescoes, date from the year 800 and are a gem of visual art from Carolingian times.
The paintings, which cover the walls of the whole nave, include a portrayal of the beheading of John the Baptist.
The church has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
