Energy City Initiated in 2001 by the SuisseEnergie (Swiss Energy) programme as a "platform for an intelligent energy policy", the "Cités de l'énergie" (Energy Cities) promote the use of renewable energy sources, supportable environmental mobility and sustainable resource management. Bern is one of 355 Energy Cities in Switzerland.

European Energy Award Gold Bern has been awarded the European Energy Award® Gold for its advanced commitment to sustainable energy policy. This is the highest certification that Energy Cities can obtain and means they have implemented at least 75% of their commitment plan.

Stade de Suisse The Bern football stadium has a solar power plant which is the largest installation of its type incorporated into a stadium in the world. It obtained the European Solar Prize in 2005 and has several rooms available for events with a surface area of 2068 m2.

Kursaal Bern & Hotel Allegro 4*sup, ISO 14001 certified The Bern Convention Centre (Kursaal) and its hotel are ISO 14001 certified and particularly committed to reducing their CO2 emissions. The renovation work undertaken in 2011/2012 contributed to further improving their carbon footprint.

Shopping guide "fair-lädele" There are still a number of shops in Bern that have resisted commercialisation. The Bern Tourist Office publishes a list on the Internet of typically "Bernese" shops and boutiques offering local, fairtrade and organic products and those that encourage meetings and exchanges between customers.
