Over six days, this festival presents musical highlights with international stars, and also features talented performers from the local music scene. Every year, the Grammy of Swiss Blues, the coveted Swiss Blues Award, is presented. The festival also offers an interesting supporting programme.
Last year for the first time on the programme, the ride on the Blues Train was such a success, that the nostalgic train will again be on its tracks between Sissach and Olten on the 5th and 6th April, 2014, powered by steam and music - on Saturday with The Red Hot Serenaders and Wolfgang Kalb, and on Sunday with Claudio and René as well as Marco Marchi & The Mojo Workers.
The cooperation between the 'Städtisches Kulturamt Weil am Rhein' (Municipal Cultural Office Weil am Rhein) and the Blues Festival Basel is presented under the motto «Basel visits Weil – the Blues connects» by the concerts of the Weiler Blues Night.
During the Promo Blues Night at the Volkshaus in Basel (free admission) on Tuesday, April 8, 2014, five newcomer bands – Crush Ice, Mike Eric, Chubby Buddy, Kaluzny Blues Band and Blind Corner - will be introduced to the critical public. The winning band will perform at the Blues Festival 2015.
Wednesday, 9th April is when the real fun starts with Richard Koechli & Blue Roots Company (CH), winner of the Swiss Blues Award 2013, as well as our magnificent Swiss Philipp Fankhauser, winner Swiss Blues Award 2005. Richard Koechli has been working as a professional guitarist, singer/ songwriter and author for more than 20 years. The slide guitar is his forte. His latest book «Masters of Blues Guitar» has been awarded with the German Prize for Musical Editions.
This will also be the night on which Urs Wüthrich-Pelloli, President of the Government Council of the Canton Baselland, will hand out the Swiss Blues Award 2014.
On Thursday, 10th April, the winners of the Promo Blues Night, 2013, Theresa Stucki and the Transatlantic band (CH), have their big appearance - together with Special Guest Fred Notter (Blues Harp) - before a large audience. The highlight of the evening will be provided by American blues singer and guitarist Ruthie Foster and her trio. Formerly more influenced by folk, gospel and Americana, in recent years she has dedicated herself more and more to the blues. Her entertainment qualities are tremendous.
The superstar of the event, Allen Toussaint, will delight the audience on 11th April in honour of the 15th Anniversary of the Festival. In New Orleans he is among the most influential record producers. He is not only celebrated for his very own style as a pianist and singer; he also produced and composed million seller hits for artists like “La Belle“, “Pointer Sisters“, “Dr. John“ and many more.
In 1998 Toussaint was accepted into the “Rock & Roll Hall of Fame“. For 2014 he already carries two more Grammy nominations in his pocket in the categories “Best American Roots Song and “Best Americana Album“.
