Lady Joséphine de Beauharnais was married to Napoleon Bonaparte in 1804 and was crowned empress in the same year. In 1810, Joséphine traveled to Switzerland using the alias «Comtesse d’Arenberg», where she also visited the St. Peter’s Island. Her party of 35 people was received in style. They had a sumptuous breakfast in the Rousseau hall and spent the afternoon dancing, laughing and eating. Early that day a great number of people from the villages had gathered in the surroundings. 210 moored boats were counted, and several thousand spectators. Many of them might have thought that the empress would pay for everything, that’s the only way the exorbitant sum of the bill can be explained.
