Welcome to Switzerland

Congratulations!
First same-sex union

celebrated in Switzerland
Two men, ages 89 and 60, have become the first couple in Switzerland to join in a same-sex union. A new law recognising such unions was passed in 2005 and came into effect January 1. The men, who wish to remain anonymous, registered their partnership in Locarno in the southern Swiss state of Ticino. The two have been together for about 30 years.
Surrounded as it is by EU countries, Switzerland has always remained alone, but never aloof. It’s a unique and diverse destination, unafraid to go its own way.

Indeed, Switzerland has frequently been nominated as the best place in the world to live, and that’s certainly true for its lively gay communities. Stylish, eclectic, professional and sometimes just a touch anarchic, its cities often surprise. Go to this most dramatic country to ski in winter, by all means, but don’t forget the summer months when the streets come alive to the sounds of Techno beats and cool Jazz. Boys and girls, meanwhile, come out to play and picnic – yes, there’s even a beach!
