The main centre of the village is in an open, sunny position, overlooking wide spaces which still admit substantial agricultural activity, which was once the population’s only important source of income.
The village takes its name from the old castle whose foundations can still be seen and from the Church of St. Peter, which on Christmas Eve in 1390 was the scene of a bloody massacre between the Guelfi and Ghibellini families.
The territory is wide, extending to the pastures of Monte Generoso. Castel San Pietro is the birthplace of numerous artists, painters and stucco workers, such as the Carabelli, Pozzi, Maggi and others, as well as of politicians of the past, notably the landamman (highest official in a Swiss canton), G.B. Maggi.
