Grande Cariçaie is nearly 40 kilometers long. A variety of landscapes is spread over nearly 3,000 hectares: marshlands, flat moors, riverside woods and steep forested slopes. It is estimated that the region is home to about 1,000 plant species and presumably 10,000 animal species. The Grande Cariçaie is for the most part a nature reserve.
This is where the country estate of Champ-Pittet is located, which was built towards the end of the 18th century. It is the main hub for Camp Pro Natura. An ornithological observatory and a vegetable garden lie next to the Neo-classical manor house. Insects can be observed in a laboratory. Nature trails lead through Grande Cariçaie to nesting sites and to stations where animals can be observed.
Among a wide wealth of nature trails the marshland- and foresttrail of the Center of Conservation "Champ-Pittet" is one of the most interesting nature trail in Switzerland. Besides the very fascinating marshland path you can also experience the reed path.
