The world's toughest and highest trail run begins in Pontresina and leads through a historic and spectacular mountain landscape. The Swiss Irontrail is 201 km long (125 miles) and so sets a new standard in the trail-running scene. The course begins in Pontresina and finishes in Chur; in between, runners must climb a total of 11,500 vertical metres (37,700 ft) and descend 12,700 m (41,700 ft). Along the way, they follow in the footsteps of the painter Giovanni Segantini and the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. The scenic highlights are the crossing of the Morteratsch and Pers Glaciers (between the Boval hut and the Diavolezza), the Fuorcla Pischa "Ibex Trail" via the Segantini hut to Muottas Muragl, the Fuorcla Surlej leading to Lake Hahnen and St. Moritz, and the Piz Nair, 3,022 m (9,915 ft) above sea level.
