The maximum gradient of the Ritom cable car is 87.8 percent. Since the cable car has been built with this gradient in mind, the cars tilt in the slightly flatter lower part of the route a tiny bit towards the mountain, thereby giving the rider the impression of being on a roller coaster.
A magnificent hiking region awaits visitors at the mountain station of Piora, at 1,793 meters above sea level. The region is well-known for the diversity of its flora and fauna. The mountain lakes are the crowning glory of the landscape. Lake Ritom is the largest of these lakes. The ten kilometer long Nature Educational Trail, which was opened in 2009, leads hikers along Lake Ritom.
There is a research station for Alpine Biology and a famous cheese dairy in the nearby Alpine village of Cadagno and at the lake bearing the same name.
