The Gelmer Railway was built in the 1920s to help with the construction of the Lake Gelmer dam. The ride on the freight train was somewhat adventurous; it was converted to a passenger railway in 2001. The open carriages take 24 passengers within 12 minutes from Handegg in Hasli Valley up to the reservoir, which is located at 1,412 meters above sea level.
The lake water is used for hydropower by the Grimsel power plant, which is open for viewing. A circular tour around Lake Gelmer takes about two hours and is suitable for hikers used to walking in mountain terrain. Brooks and enormous rock ledges along the shores of the lake invite visitors to tarry awhile. Rope guardrails have been erected for greater safety on the rock ledges, which sometimes border steep rockfaces.
