In the year 1976 the engineer, artist and art patron Léonard Gianadda decided to build a house in Martigny. But the construction work for the house led to the unearthing of the ruins of Switzerland's oldest Gallo-Roman temple. Consequently, Gianadda built a cultural center instead of a house and established the Gianadda Foundation in memory of his brother Pierre, who had died shortly before.
The cultural center houses the finds dating back to the Gallo-Roman era, 50 oldtimers and classic cars that were built between 1897 and 1939, changing, world-famous art exhibitions and concerts. An extensive collection of sculptures by renowned 20th century artists can be viewed in the large park.
