O plano era desligar a rota montesa Furka. Desde a abertura do túnel Furka, em 1982, a rota deixou de ser necessária. Entretanto, a rota do trem, um espetáculo que vale a pena ser visto, foi preservada graças à iniciativa privada.

It took more than 25 years of hard work to renovate the full length of the old Furka mountain route for use by steam trains. Today, nostalgic steam locomotives and original restored passenger carriages run from June to September on the cograil sections from Oberwald via Gletsch to Realp in the canton of Uri.

Since 2010, trains have once again made their way steeply uphill over boldly constructed viaducts and through a narrow, winding tunnel from Oberwald in the Goms Valley to Gletsch, before ascending a 118 per mille gradient towards the Mutt Glacier, past the foreland of the Rhone Glacier. Between the stations of Muttbach and Furka, the train passes through the 1,874m-long Furka Summit Tunnel, then descends to Realp in the Urserental valley amid the flowery Alpine meadows and over the Steffenbach folding bridge.

The romance of steam in the Swiss Alps: just as they were 100 years ago, the locomotives are fired by coal and supplied with water.
