Introdução

Montebello Castle is the second-largest castle in Bellinzona. It was built in the late Middle Ages and is often referred to as the “small castle”, “new castle” or “medium-sized castle”.

Originally built in the late 13th century as the residence of the Rusca family from Como, the castle was taken over by the Visconti family from Milan in 1335 and expanded for strategic and military purposes. The castle was protected by high walls with battlements and corner towers. A second, stronger wall with round towers was built during the second half of the 15th century. Montebello Castle was an essential part of Bellinzona’s defence system and, together with Castelgrande, formed a defensive ring around the medieval city.

Today, the castle houses an archaeological exhibition illustrating the history of the medieval fortification, the restoration work performed on it and important milestones in local history. Visitors can also enjoy interesting educational activities organised by the Ticinese Archaeological Association. Outside the castle, there is a well-equipped children’s playground and a photo spot for the Grand Tour of Switzerland. Visitors to the castle can also try their hand at making Salame dei Castelli di Bellinzona, a traditional smoked sausage.

The castle can be reached on foot from the Piazza Collegiata, by car, on the “Artù” tourist train or using public transport. From the castle, you can enjoy a splendid view of Bellinzona and its surroundings.
