Architecture and history in Rossinière
Visão geral
Introdução
Rossinière is located at 930 m above sea level in the Pays-d'Enhaut (Oberland) and has numerous wooden chalets with painted and intricately carved facades. This centuries-old cultural heritage stands to be admired in the village and in the hamlet of La Frasse.
Its magnificent wooden houses shape the quaint Rossinière village - the intricately decorated facades of which can be more closely admired on a theme path in and around the village that is completed in around an hour.
The Grand Chalet of Rossinière, where the painter Balthus once lived, is a prime example of this cultural heritage - and a chalet with particularly elaborate façades. It catches the eye through its gigantic and elaborately worked facade on five levels, punctuated by 113 windows. A wealthy cheese maker who then set-up a gigantic cellar for the maturation his cheeses completed it in 1756.
The painter Balthus (1908-2001), who was also an honorary cultural attaché of France, moved with his family to the Grand Chalet in 1977 - where during the years to follow, he received some of the most famous writers, painters and artists of the 20th century.
