Sustainable development in Valais In 1999, a foundation for sustainable development in the mountain regions was set up, formalising the wishes expressed in the Sustainable Development Charter adopted in 1998 by the Grand Conseil (Grand Council) of the Valais canton.

Saas Fee, Energy City Initiated in 2001 by the SuisseEnergie (Swiss Energy) programme as a "platform for an intelligent energy policy", the "Cités de l'énergie" (Energy Cities) promote the use of renewable energy sources, supportable environmental mobility and sustainable resource management. Saas-Fee is one of 313 Energy Cities in Switzerland.

A pioneer in its field, it has invested between 0.5 and 1 million Swiss francs in concrete environmental initiatives since 2002. For example, the "Matterhorn Glacier Paradise" restaurant & shop is the highest MINERGIE-P® certified building in the world; a new photovoltaic system covering a surface area of 185 m2 has been installed at the Trockener Steg resort.
